What is Genetic Counselling?

Knowledge, guidance, and informed choices

Genetic counselling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. It sits at the intersection of medical science and human communication — translating complex genomics into decisions families can actually make and live with.

This process integrates interpretation of family and medical histories, education about inheritance, testing and management, and counselling that promotes informed choices and adaptation to risk or condition.

The scope is wide and growing: prenatal genetics, paediatric and rare disease genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes, cardiovascular and neurological genetics, and pharmacogenomics. As genomic medicine moves into routine care, genetic counselling touches nearly every specialty in medicine.

A session typically covers

  • Review of your family and medical history
  • Explanation of inheritance and test options
  • Interpretation of genetic results in plain language
  • Guidance on reproductive and family decisions
  • Resources, referrals, and next-step planning
